Buying Guide

How to Light a Farmhouse, Resort or Event Lawn

Good farmhouse lighting is not one large flood light. It is a layered plan where each zone has a clear job.

1. Think in zones, not in fixtures

Every farmhouse or venue breaks into the same six zones. Light them in this order - each one changes what the next needs. The job --- Arrival, safety, vehicle movement The visual anchor of the property Where people gather Safe movement in the dark Depth, atmosphere, height Feature and security The mistake to avoid: lighting zone 3 before zones 1, 2 and 5. A lawn lit in isolation is a bright rectangle surrounded by darkness.

2. Zone 1 - Gate and driveway

The approach sets the impression and does the most safety work, because it's where vehicles and people mix. Driveway. Street lights on 3-4 m poles, one every 12-16 m. A 30W (3,000 lm) is right for a single-vehicle drive; 50W (5,000 lm) for a wider approach or where a bus or tempo will come in for events.

3. Zone 2 - The house or building facade

The building is the visual anchor. If it's dark, the whole property reads as empty. Wall washers at the base of the main facade, grazing upward. Butt 1 m bars end to end for a continuous sheet of light, or space at 1-1.5 m for overlapping scallops.

4. Zone 3 - Lawn and event area

This is where the owner-versus-operator split matters most. For a family farmhouse, the lawn rarely needs area lighting at all. Light the edges - trees, boundary, pathways - and leave the middle soft. An over-lit lawn kills the reason people sit outside in the evening.

5. Zone 4 - Pathways and steps

The zone that prevents accidents, and the one insurers care about at a commercial venue. Paved paths: burial lights set flush, 1.5-2 m apart. Nothing protrudes, nothing gets kicked, and guests in heels or barefoot children are safe. IP68 rated, so monsoon pooling is not a problem.

6. Zone 5 - Trees and planting

This is the zone that separates a professionally lit property from a functionally lit one, and it's the cheapest zone on the list. Uplighting trees does something no other fixture can: it creates height and depth beyond the building. A lawn with three uplit trees at its edge feels like an outdoor room. The same lawn with dark trees feels like a field. - Small tree or large shrub: one 7W or 10W spike light at the base, aimed into the canopy. - Medium tree: two 12W spikes from different angles, so the canopy is modelled rather than flattened. - Large mature tree: three 15W or 20W spikes spread around the trunk. - Aim into the canopy, not at the trunk.

7. Zone 6 - Water features and boundary

Fountains and water bodies: submersible spot lights in SS304 stainless steel, IP68 for continuous submersion. Warm white for a classic look, RGB with remote where the venue wants colour for events. Place fixtures below the water line aiming up through the falling water - a lit fountain is one of the strongest focal points a property has after dark, and it works from every angle. Stainless steel matters here rather than being a spec detail: aluminium and mild steel corrode in permanently wet installation, and replacing a corroded fixture means draining the fountain.

8. Warm white, and the one place cool white belongs

3000K warm white across every decorative and hospitality zone - facade, lawn edges, paths, trees, fountain, boundary wall detail. Warm light flatters stone, wood, foliage and skin. It is what every hotel and resort uses, and the reason those spaces feel expensive. 6500K cool white belongs in exactly two places: the driveway street lights, where visibility matters more than mood, and any security flood covering a service area, staff entrance or storage yard.

9. Control - a farmhouse has more switching needs than a house

Properties like this get used in bursts: empty for five days, then full for a weekend or an event. Design the control for that. - Day/night photocell on the security and boundary circuits, so the property never sits fully dark on a weekday. - Separate circuits, minimum four: security/boundary, driveway, facade, lawn/event. An event venue should add a fifth for pathways. - Digital timer on the decorative circuits, so the facade shuts off at a set hour without anyone walking the property. - Label the distribution board. At a venue, the person operating the lights on a wedding night is not the person who installed them.

10. Budget, in the order it should be spent

If the budget won't cover everything at once, this is the sequence that gives the most visible result per rupee: 1. Gate pillars and facade - two column lights and a run of wall washers transform the arrival experience for a modest sum. 2. Steps and pathways - safety first among the functional items, and cheap.

11. Before you order

- Send a site sketch or a satellite screenshot with the building, drive, lawn and trees marked. This category is about position more than product. - Say how the property is used - family weekends, paid events, resort operation. It changes the lawn and parking specification completely. - Count the trees you want lit and note their rough size. - Confirm existing power points and how far they are from each zone. Cable runs across a large property are a real cost. - Ask for project pricing.

FAQ

Farmhouse & Venue Lighting FAQ

Quick answers before planning a farmhouse, resort or banquet lawn lighting project.

Six zones, six fixture types: street lights on the driveway, wall washers and column lights on the building facade, flood lights on the lawn, burial and step lights on paths and stairs, spike lights uplighting trees, and fountain lights in water features. Most properties use five or six of these together - a single fixture type repeated everywhere is what makes lighting look flat.

A family farmhouse lit well typically takes 25 to 50 fixtures across all zones. A banquet lawn or resort with parking, multiple buildings and an event area runs past 100. Fixture count matters less than spread - many small fixtures across zones beat a few large floods every time.

Use 200W floods (24,000 lumens) on the boundary or poles, angled inward, one every 15 to 20 m for a typical event lawn. Mount at 12 feet minimum so guests aren't dazzled at eye level, and overlap the beams so each fixture's edge reaches the next one's centre. Uniform coverage matters more than peak brightness.

100W (12,000 lumens) for small lawns and secondary areas, 200W (24,000 lumens) for a full event lawn. For a family farmhouse, you often need no lawn floods at all - lighting the edges, trees and paths and leaving the centre soft usually gives a better evening than flooding the whole space.

Stake spike lights at the base and aim into the canopy, not at the trunk. One 7W or 10W fixture for a small tree, two 12W from different angles for a medium tree, three 15W or 20W around a large mature tree. Lit foliage glows and adds height to the property; a lit trunk is just a bright pole.

Warm white (3000K) everywhere guests go - facade, lawn edges, paths, trees, fountain, boundary detail. Cool white (6500K) only on the driveway street lights and any security flood over a service area. Cool white on a farmhouse facade is the fastest way to make a beautiful property look like a factory gate.

Street lights on 3-4 m poles, one every 12 to 16 m. 30W (3,000 lumens) for a single-vehicle drive, 50W (5,000 lumens) for a wider approach or where event vehicles will enter. Street lights rather than floods, because the elongated beam follows the drive instead of spilling across the lawn.

Burial lights set flush in paved paths, 1.5 to 2 m apart, so nothing protrudes and guests are safe barefoot or in heels. Spike lights along garden paths through planting. A recessed glare-shielded step light on every flight of stairs - a single unlit step is the most likely injury on any property.

Burial and fountain lights are IP68, rated for continuous submersion rather than just rain, which matters where paths pool during monsoon. Spike lights, wall lights and flood lights are IP65 - fully dust-tight and protected against water jets, correct for anything mounted above ground level.

Yes. They're IP68 rated for continuous submersion and built in SS304 stainless steel, which is the spec that matters - aluminium and mild steel corrode in permanently wet installation, and replacing a corroded fixture means draining the fountain.

Parking area coverage, driveway lighting, facade lighting on the main building, 200W floods across the event lawn, path and step lighting throughout, and uplit trees at the lawn edges. Put the lawn and decorative circuits on separate switches - events run to a schedule and someone will want them independently controlled.

Prioritise the boundary and gate over the lawn. Up-down wall lights along the boundary wall with 100W floods where real coverage is needed, mounted at 10 to 12 feet and angled inward and downward so light stays on your property. Put these on a day/night photocell so the property is never fully dark on a weekday.

With a day/night photocell sensor, yes - it switches at dusk and dawn with no intervention, which is what a property that sits empty on weekdays needs. Digital timers suit the decorative circuits, shutting the facade off at a set hour. Keep security, driveway, facade and lawn on separate circuits.

Lower than most people expect, because the right approach uses many small fixtures rather than a few large ones. A 40-fixture scheme of spike lights, burial lights, wall washers and column lights typically draws under 700 watts in total - less than a single old 750W halogen flood, while lighting the entire property.
