Buying Guide

How to choose outdoor LED lights in India

Pick the fixture by where it mounts, how high it sits, how wide it must spread and what it has to survive.

Start with the space, not the product

A 100W flood light and a 100W street light use similar power, but they throw light in completely different shapes. Roads need street optics, grounds need floods, warehouses need high bays, and building fronts need warm facade lighting.

Mounting height decides wattage

Do not buy outdoor lights by floor area first. Light drops sharply with distance, so the height of the pole, wall or ceiling decides the useful wattage band.

  • Street lights: 30W for 3-4 m poles, 50W for 4-5 m, 100W for 6-7 m, 150W for 8-9 m, 200W for 10-12 m.
  • High bays: 50W-60W up to 5 m, 100W for 5-7 m, 150W for 7-10 m, 180W-200W for 10-14 m.
  • Flood lights: 50W for gates and small yards, 100W for driveways, 200W for loading bays, 300W for turf and large areas.

Read lumens, not only watts

Watts tell you electricity consumed. Lumens tell you light produced. Good current outdoor fittings sit around 100-140 lumens per watt; anything far below that is dated technology.

Beam angle controls the shape

Narrow beams create columns for pillars, facade accents and tall-pole throw. Medium beams control focused pools. Wide 120° beams give broad overlapping coverage for high bays, area floods and road lighting.

IP rating and surge protection both matter

IP65 is suitable for most wall and pole mounted outdoor fixtures in the monsoon. IP68 is required where a light can sit in water, like burial and fountain lights. For Indian voltage fluctuation, wide 90-265V input and surge protection matter just as much.

Buying for a project

For twenty or more fixtures, send dimensions, mounting height and site use before ordering. A layout prevents over-buying, avoids dark pockets and helps confirm pole diameter, beam angle and wattage before installation day.

FAQ

Outdoor LED lighting questions

Short answers for the most common buying decisions.

A street light throws an elongated beam for roads and lanes. A flood light throws a wide symmetrical beam for yards, grounds, gates and parking areas.

Use pole height and road width. Roughly 30W suits 3-4 m poles, 50W suits 4-5 m, 100W suits 6-7 m, 150W suits 8-9 m and 200W suits large roads.

Up to 5 m use 50W-60W, 5-7 m use 100W, 7-10 m use 150W and 10-14 m use 180W-200W.

Yes for pole and wall mounted outdoor fixtures. IP68 is needed for burial, fountain and underwater lights where standing water or submersion is possible.

Use warm white for decorative facade, garden, pillar and boundary lighting. Use cool white for roads, warehouses, parking, security and sports grounds.

The fixture needs a photocell sensor or timer. Both can be wired with AC lights for dusk-to-dawn or fixed-time control.

Yes. Lumencity supplies RWA, builder, industrial and government projects with BIS documentation, GST invoicing and PAN India delivery.
