Complete guide to choosing the right solar street light
Introduction
Solar street lights are becoming one of the most popular outdoor lighting solutions for homes, streets, parking areas, and infrastructure projects. Unlike traditional street lights, solar street lights operate using energy from the sun, eliminating electricity costs and complex wiring.
Modern solar street lights combine high-efficiency solar panels, long-life batteries, and LED technology to provide reliable lighting throughout the night. These systems store solar energy during the day and automatically power the lights after sunset.
How Solar Street Lights Work
A solar street light has four main components: a Solar Panel that converts sunlight into electricity; a Battery that stores that electricity for night-time use; an LED Light that provides bright illumination at very low energy consumption; and a Controller that manages charging and auto switches the light on at dusk and off at dawn.
How to Choose the Right Wattage
3–5 m height: 6W – 12W | 5–8 m height: 12W – 40W | 8–12 m height: 40W – 120W
Lower wattage lights suit residential gates and gardens. Higher wattage is for roads, parking lots, and commercial areas.
Installation Height Guide
3–4 m: Residential houses, pathways, gardens
5–8 m: Society roads, village streets
10–12 m: Highways, commercial roads, large parking areas
Installing at the correct height ensures even illumination and improves safety.
Battery Type – The Most Important Factor
All Lumencity street lights use LiFePO4 (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, which offer longer lifespan (5–10 years), higher safety, better heat tolerance, and more charge cycles compared to cheaper alternatives.
Backup Time & Autonomy
Standard lights provide 10–12 hours of backup. High-capacity models deliver 18–36 hours. Our lights are engineered with autonomy — they continue working for several days during cloudy weather.
Waterproof Rating
Always choose IP65 or higher. This confirms protection against dust and pressurised water. Our lights range from IP64 (sheltered walls) to IP67 (highway / monsoon-exposed) depending on the model.
All-in-One vs Split Panel
All-in-One: Panel, battery, and LED in one unit. Easy to install, minimal wiring. Best for homes, gates, farmhouses, and society roads.
Split Panel: Panel sits separately from the light head — ideal when the pole is partially shaded or for government/PWD specifications requiring a separate panel.
Benefits of Solar Street Lights
Zero electricity cost · Environmentally friendly · Low maintenance · No underground wiring · Works during power cuts · BIS certified for safety
