How to light a home entrance
One entrance, three jobs: crown, wash, watch
A well-lit entrance layers three roles. Crown the pillars with a lamp on top so the gate reads from down the street. Wash the pillar face and nameplate with a wall light so the texture and house number show. Watch the approach with a compact security light covering the gate area. One product rarely does all three - the best entrances use two or three small lights instead of one big one.
Warm for welcome, cool for watch
Pillar-top lamps and wall washers should be warm white (2700-3000K) - that is what makes stone, brass and brick look expensive at night. The security light over the approach can run cooler white, angled down and inward so it never glares at visitors or the street.
Size the lamp to the pillar
A pillar lamp should sit within the pillar cap, not overhang it - measure the cap before ordering. Always fit pillars in matching pairs with the same model and colour temperature; one odd lamp is more visible than no lamp.
Check the sun at the pillar top
Gate pillars often sit under porch overhangs, arches or old trees. If the pillar cap gets 5-6 hours of open sky, top-mounted lamps will charge fully. If it is shaded, shift the security light higher on the boundary wall into the sun.
The entrance-grade checklist
Entrance lights face street dust, monsoon spray and daily gate slams. Insist on IP65 sealing, a LiFePO4 battery, solid cap or wall mounting, auto dusk-to-dawn operation, and a written 2-year warranty.
